The European Cup

2004-2007

Introduction

The aim of the European Cup (EC) was to provide a tournament circuit that was independent of any single sponsor. It is the nature of sponsorship that from time to time the level of sponsorship changes or sponsors withdraw. The EC system was independant of any single sponsorship as it was funded by the participating tournaments which were free to get their own sponsors.

Any EGF member country may have had one or two EC tournaments in each EC year. Each tournament paid the EGF for the points they wanted to award and the points were awarded to the players according to the results of the tournament. The price was 6 euro per point (from 1st June 2005); the price of a point could only be changed annually. There were various levels of tournament with different points, ranging from 25 to 400. All tournaments were in fact 25 or 50 points.
