Ing Memorial Qualification System --------------------------------- Described below is a simplified description of the system used. Rules may be set and modified by Executive as conditions dictate. The Ing Memorial will be played with Ing rules and Ing timers, and will consist of six rounds. The rounds will be paired with the Swiss system. The Ing rules will be explained before the start of the tournament. There are 24 places in the tournament. Participants normally have to be at least 4 dan. The following players will be invited personally: 1. Top three in previous Ing Memorial; 2. European professionals; 3. A strong resident oriental may get a place if one is available after the country and personal places. Member countries earn places for players of their nomination based on a points system for the last 5 European Championships. The points are awarded for positions 1 to 20 with non-European players deleted. First position earns 20 points down to 1 point for 20th. Places are earned as follows: 20- 59 points - 1 place 60-119 points - 2 places 120-199 points - 3 places 200 and over - 4 places If the total of country places exceeds 24 then the point limits will be tempoarily tightened. If the total of country places and other places exceedS 24, then the number of places allocated to countries is reduced by places earned by players from that country under rules 1 to 3 (by a prescribed method). Personal places must be accepted or declined by an earlier deadline than the country places. Some countries with less than 20 points may be added to complete the list or to replace players or countries who decline to play. Stand-by reserves may come from the home country or from nearby countries.
