18th World Youth Goe Championship

Sponsored by Ing Foundation
The event took place in Maui, Hawaii, USA
in August 2001.

In Maui, Hawaii, Korea won both sections of the WYGC.

Under-18 winner was Kim Hyung-Hwan and under-12 was Kwon Hyung-Jin. Both were unbeaten.

Russia's Ilia Chikchine was third under-12 and 8 year old Curtis Tang of the USA was fourth.

USA's WYGC veteran Eric Lui, playing for the first time in the Senior Division, lost to the Taiwanese, Hungarian and Russian players, while defeating the Czech player. Richard Liang of Canada prevailed over Ukrainian player Mike Kozlov, as well as Gina Shi, a young 1-dan from San Francisco who was invited to round out the field. But he fell short against Cai Geng Yang, a prodigy who also represented Singapore in the recent World Amateur Go Championship, and the lightning-paced Pal Bologh (Hungary) who also got the best of Eric Lui.

Unfortunately the Chinese could not get Visas which spoilt the status of the event a little.
